Qualico’s New Office Designed to Help Take Care of the Planet
It’s been just over six months since we moved into our brand new Qualico office building. Seeing how today, April 22nd, is Earth Day, we wanted to highlight some of the environmentally-friendly features that were incorporated into our building from having very few garbage cans to a leading-edge lighting system. Find out more below!
Better Waste Management – Our office building is over 32,500 sq.ft. spread across three floors, has over 60 individual offices and workstations, 4 boardrooms… but only 2 (yes, 2!) garbage cans. In an effort to encourage employees to practice better waste management and therefore reducing the amount of garbage sent to landfills, only 2 waste bins can be found in our office – one in the lunch room and another in the coffee lounge. Both garbage cans are accompanied by a soft plastics recycling bin, compost bin, and mixed recycling bin to further encourage employees to think about recycling or composting before throwing anything out, helping us divert 90% of our waste from landfills.
Leading-Edge LED Lighting System – If you stop by our office post-pandemic, you will notice that the lights may be off or dimmed in areas of the building. No, nothing is broken! It’s our leading edge LED lighting system that turns on, off, or dims, depending on outside light levels. The lights include motion and heat sensing technology so if it’s dark out, they will turn on as you enter and move throughout the space and stay on while someone is in the office (and off if no one is there, saving on electricity)!
Top-of-the-Line HVAC System – The top-of-the-line HVAC system chosen for our office shares the hot and cold air already in the building before dispensing energy to make new heated or cooled air. For example, on a hot morning the warm air on the east side of the building will be redistributed to the west side, and the cool air in the west will be moved to the east. This allows for an even temperature throughout and a more comfortable working environment, eliminating the need for individual, energy-consuming space heaters.
Biophilic Sound-Dampening Moss Wall – An impressive triple height atrium with suspended staircase and skybridge tunnels through the centre of our office building. Although this allows for plenty of natural light, it doesn’t always pose well for sound travel. To help naturally reduce noise pollution and bring the outside in, 198 sq.ft. of maintenance-free moss walls were installed in our lobby.
